Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Tokyo
Welcome to Japan! Upon arrival at Narita or Haneda International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Tokyo.
Day 2 Tokyo
Begin with a serene morning yoga session at Gajoen, an elegant venue known for its tranquil ambiance and stunning traditional architecture. Afterward, you will embark on a journey through Tokyo, exploring its dynamic blend of old and new. You will find a perfect balance of inner peace and cultural exploration, allowing you to experience the essence of Tokyo while staying centered and mindful.
Day 3 Tokyo
Immerse yourself in the art of Kodo, the ancient Japanese practice of incense appreciation. This sensory experience will deepen your connection to the present moment. The rest of the day is yours to explore Tokyo at your own pace, perhaps taking a peaceful stroll through one of the city's beautiful gardens, where you can reflect and relax amidst nature.
Day 4 Tokyo > Mt. Koya
Today you will travel to the sacred Mt. Koya, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Japan's most important spiritual centers. You will explore the spiritual landmarks and serene landscapes such as Okunoin Cemetery, where towering cedar trees and ancient stone lanterns create a deeply spiritual atmosphere. This evening you will check in at a traditional temple lodge, where the tranquil surroundings and monastic lifestyle offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in mindfulness and reflection.
Day 5 Mt. Koya > Kyoto
This morning you will have an opportunity to join the morning ritual. Then you will travel to Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan. Explore the peaceful Tofukuji Temple known for its serene Zen gardens and beautiful architecture. Tofukuji offers a tranquil escape from the hustle of daily life.
Day 6 Kyoto
Start your day with a Zen meditation at a temple. Led by the temple’s head priest, this experience will introduce you to the fundamentals of Zen meditation, emphasizing mindfulness, self-awareness, and the cultivation of inner peace. The serene environment of the temple provides the perfect backdrop for deepening your practice in a meaningful and accessible way. In the afternoon explore the northern part of Kyoto such as Kinkakuji temple and Arashiyama area.
Day 7 Kyoto
Join a shakyo (sutra copying) or calligraphy experience, a meditative practice that allows you to focus on the present moment through the careful and deliberate act of writing. After this calming activity, you will visit Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, where you can admire its serene gardens and historic artworks. Then explore the iconic Kiyomizu Temple, offering breathtaking views of Kyoto from its wooden terrace. In the evening stroll through the Gion area, where you can soak in the traditional atmosphere of Kyoto’s famous geisha district.
Day 8 Kyoto > Tsuruoka
Today you will travel to Tsuruoka, a city steeped in spiritual and cultural heritage. Located in the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, Tsuruoka is known for its connection to the ancient practice of yamabushi, or mountain ascetic monks, and serves as the gateway to the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains. Upon arrival relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, preparing yourself for the transformative experiences that await in the coming days.
Day 9, 10, 11 Tsuruoka
Yamabushi are mountain ascetic monks in Japan who follow a spiritual path rooted in the ancient practices of Shugendo, a syncretic religion that combines elements of Buddhism, Shinto, and Taoism. In Tsuruoka, yamabushi are deeply connected to the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains, where they undergo rigorous training as part of the ancient Shugendo tradition. This training involves spiritual practices such as meditation, mountain hiking, and rituals designed to foster a profound connection with nature and the divine. Tsuruoka’s yamabushi are custodians of these centuries-old traditions, guiding seekers on transformative journeys of self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment. Next three days, you will embark on a transformative program on Mt. Haguro, led by yamabushi and Zen masters. This immersive experience includes a guided hike through the sacred Dewa Sanzan, as well as both indoor and outdoor meditations that blend Zen and yamabushi practices. The program offers ample opportunities for guided reflection, allowing you to deeply review and preview your life’s journey in a serene and private setting.
Day 12 Tsuruoka > Ginzan Onsen
You will have the option to visit temples in the Tsuruoka area to see sokushinbutsu, the self-mummified monks who embody the ultimate act of spiritual devotion in the Shugendo tradition. This visit offers a rare glimpse into an ancient practice that speaks to the profound dedication of these monks. Later, you will travel to the picturesque Ginzan Onsen, where you can unwind in the soothing hot springs and enjoy the nostalgic charm of this historic hot spring town.
Day 13 Ginzan Onsen > Tokyo
Today you will travel back to Tokyo. Rest of the day is free for your own exploration.
Day 14 Depart Tokyo
You will be transferred to Haneda or Narita Airport for your onward flight.
